Like many of the missionary women, Barry spent the monsoon season in the hills of North India, where her in-laws, missionaries stationed in what would become Pakistan, could join her in the cool, dry weather.  By August 1947, Barry was about to give birth to a second child.  On August 14, 1947, Pakistan became an independent nation.  The next day, Great Britain transferred its power to India, and Jawaharlal Nehru became India’s first Prime Minister.  The partition of Punjab in Northern India led to the displacement of 14 million Sikhs, Muslims, and Hindus, as many as half a million of whom were massacred.  Barry recounts her experiences during this troubled time, including the birth of son John at the end of the August,1947.
