The <strong>UNITE study (Understanding Neurologic Injury and Traumatic Encephalopathy)<\/strong> is a retrospective analysis of, professional and amateur athletes, Veterans and other individuals who sustained cumulative repetitive traumatic brain injury(s) (TBI) before passing away.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible participant\u2019s brains are subsequently donated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/mckeelab\/va-bu-sli-brain-bank\/\">VA-BU-SLI Brain Bank<\/a> at the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bedford.va.gov\/\">Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital<\/a> in partnership with the Boston Veterans Administration and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sportslegacy.org\/\">Sports Legacy Institute<\/a>, for pathological examination and analysis. In concert with pathological analysis, family members or loved ones of the decedent provide retrospective medical and behavioral data. Over the next four-years the our goal is to address the following aims:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Establish consensus criteria for the pathological diagnosis of CTE to differentiate it from other neurodegenerative diseases;<\/li>\n<li>Establish a nationwide brain donation program for TBI;<\/li>\n<li>Examine the relationship between cumulative brain trauma, clinical symptoms, substance abuse, &amp; rigorous quantitative regional assessment of tau, A\u00df, &amp; axonal pathology in CTE and sTBI;<\/li>\n<li>Determine the neuroimaging signatures of CTE neuropathology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2014, a cooperative grant from the National Institute of Heath (NIH) \u2013 bolstered by major funding from the National Football League (NFL) \u2013 was awarded to Dr. McKee and her research team.
