{"id":5,"date":"2017-06-30T12:08:56","date_gmt":"2017-06-30T16:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/masslaw\/massachusetts-law-update\/"},"modified":"2022-03-03T13:56:55","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T18:56:55","slug":"massachusetts-law-update","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/masslaw\/","title":{"rendered":"Massachusetts Law Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For many years, legislative history on Massachusetts statutes has been notoriously difficult\u2014if not impossible\u2014to find.\u00a0 To help remedy this problem, Professor Sean Kealy wrote \u201cA Guide to Gathering and Using Legislative History in Massachusetts,\u201d which was published in the <em>Massachusetts Law Review<\/em>.\u00a0 \u00a0In addition, every student who has taken Professor Kealy\u2019s Legislative Policy &amp; Drafting Clinic at Boston University School of Law has participated in the Massachusetts Legislative History Project.\u00a0 Students picked a recently passed statute and gathered as much relevant information and documents that they could during the semester. Our histories include the procedural history of the statute, \u00a0testimony submitted to the relevant committees, journal entries, speeches given on the floors of the Senate and House and committee reports.\u00a0 In addition, students write a final memorandum describing their efforts\u2014where they found information, where they did not, and where information may exist\u2014but to which they did not have access.\u00a0 Hopefully, these documents will be an ongoing service to the Massachusetts bench and bar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">S.
