Interactive Design Checklists
New Designer
Your assigned Onboarding Mentor will help set you up and get you started.
- Welcome [Morning]
You’ll be introduced to everyone in Interactive Design and around External Affairs.
- Machine Setup & Access [Afternoon]
Once your new machine is ready, your Onboarding Mentor [with your BU Kerberos email address supplied] will ask Creative Director Jon Brousseau will provide you with access to 1Password. From here, you’ll be able to use our department credentials to:
- Download and install the necessary design and development software
(Unless it’s already supplied, in which case, you’ll verify) :
While those download and install, you can also:
While you’re setting up, your Onboarding Mentor [with your BU Kerberos email address supplied] will put in a ticket request with Boston University’s Information Systems & Technology[IS&T] for you to access buweb‘s npm — and our web service, reporting, and ticket management platform: ServiceNow.
Your Onboarding Mentor will also put in a few requests [this needs to link to a password-protected page] for you, which includes:
- Review MarCom Team Site [1–2 Days]
The access request should be resolved in a day or two, ideally, but it really depends on IS&T’s capacity. While that’s happening, you’ll immerse yourself in this MarCom Team Site — absorbing all the details about Boston University, External Affairs, Creative Services, and finally our Interactive Design sections.
- WordPress & BU Network Introduction [~3 hours]
If you’re new to WordPress, you’ll receive a brief walkthrough on logging into your training site and working through the tutorial. Even if you’re familiar with WordPress, this walkthrough will help you understand BU-specific design patterns.
- Web Dev Sandboxes & Dev Environment [~30 min. – 1 hour]
Unsure about sandboxes or deploys? This session will cover those topics.
- Development Setup [> 1 hour]
Install your Code Editor and GitHub GUI app [Tower].
- Git Tutorial [~2 – 3 hours]
Learn how to push, pull, create pull requests, and merge. Learn terminal basics and installation with assistance as needed. You’ll only need to remember a few key commands in the terminal. Resolve conflicts and understand our Git workflow with bu-ist repositories.
- Responsive Child Theme Tutorial [3 hours]
Build a sample child theme and learn Grunt and Sass for theme compilation.
- BU Today, Bostonia, and Research Tutorial [3 hours]
Get an overview of working on each site before your first editorial article.
