Roles & Responsibilities

The Editorial Services department is comprised of the University editor, editors, and copy editors.

The University Editor manages many large annual publications, such as the University’s Commencement program (“Redbook”) and the University’s Annual Report, among other high-profile projects, though they maintain a general awareness of workflow through the department. The University editor, along with the editor of Bostonia and alumni publications, determines BU Editorial Style guidelines.

Editors usually cover specific “beats” for particular schools and colleges such as LAW, ENG, SPH, etc. These beats are assigned to them by the University editor.

The Senior Managing Editor supervises the flow of projects through editorial services and assigns projects to the Copy Edit team. The assistant editor proofreads materials along with the Copy Edit team and works closely with the University editor to handle web and print projects that do not specifically fall within other editors’ proscribed “beats.”

Copy Editors proofread most of the written materials MarCom produces. The copy editors also perform light fact checking of MarCom-produced alumni magazines such as CFA, COM/365, focus.

More specific job duties can be found in the Editors, Copy Editors, and Content Managers and Proof Reviews sections of this website.
