The Boston University Brand

The Boston University Brand is overseen by the executive director, Marketing & Creative Services; the creative director, Interactive Design; and the senior associate creative director, Marketing Design. Account executives (AEs) also have a role in reviewing work for brand compliance and branding projects (such as creating department sub-brand logos, social avatars, presentation templates, style guides, etc.). This is a service CS provides free of charge.

BU Brand Overview

Brand Website

The brand website outlines the BU branding guidelines. The site is a useful tool when clarifying branding rules to clients and a direct link to a relevant page on the site is often used in these kinds of correspondences. The site is also a great tool to familiarize yourself with the BU voice and attitude which is an important part of our strategic marketing efforts. To start, read about our brand story.

Brand Office Hours

Held weekly on Tuesdays, this is a time to raise any brand queries that either were initiated from a client, from a brand website submission, for an internal project, or seen “in the wild” by someone in Creative Services. Our brand team, which oversees governance of the BU brand, includes the Executive Director of Marketing & Creative Services, Senior Associate Creative Director of Print Design, Creative Director of Interactive Design, the Associate Creative Director of Interactive Design and the Senior Web Content Manager.

Office hours are attended by the brand team and also members of the Print Studio team and Account Management team as needed.

Brand Office Hours Process

If a client or internal resource has a question about Branding (i.e., for their print or web pieces), the respective Account Manager will add a card to the “Branding Issues” Trello board in the column labeled “Office Hours Inquiries/Violations” and the item will be discussed at the next weekly scheduled Brand Office Hours.

If a question arises on branding for an internal project, the assigned AE can help traffic the conversation through proper brand channels.

Brand 101

To ensure communicators across the University understand how to execute the BU Brand in their works, we hold “Brand 101s” several times a year, usually every other month. It is open to anyone who feels it will improve their work and all are welcome to sign up by using the form on the Brand Website. These 90-minute sessions are presented by the Brand Team and give a thorough overview of BU’s brand guidelines and allow for any questions attendees may have. This is also a great way to get to know our brand and all new Creative Services staff are strongly encouraged to attend.
