Time Off
Types of Leave
Creative Services abides by BU HR’s policy of time off for full-time employees. The specific types of time off available to eligible employees are as follows:
- Vacation Days: Employees accrue vacation days based on their length of service and employment status.
- Sick Days: Employees are entitled to sick leave for personal or family illness.
- Personal Days: These are available for personal matters that require time off from work.
- Unpaid Time Off: Employees can take unpaid leave under certain circumstances.
- Sympathy Time: Leave is provided for bereavement.
- Jury Duty: Employees are granted time off to fulfill their civic duty.
- Intersession: Time off during periods when the University is not in session.
These benefits are available under the appropriate circumstances as defined in the employee handbook or collective bargaining agreement.
Vacation Time Accrual
Time off for Vacations is accrued on an hourly basis.
New employees are eligible to use accrued Vacation Leave time after completing three (3) months of continuous service.
A day is counted as 8 hours. To best avoid errors, requests in BUworks should be submitted by each day you’ll be away and not by a date range.
Requesting Time Off
Each department may have small procedural variations of requesting time off—but in general, follow these steps:
- Notify Your Supervising Manager
Speak with your manager about your intended time away from the office as soon as you can. - Log Time in BUworks
Enter your time off in BUworks. Your manager will need to approve it there as soon as they have a moment. - Update the MarCom Vacation Calendar
Add an event to the MarCom Vacation Calendar. You might want to invite your manager to this event so that they receive a notification on their calendar. Note: Set this event to ‘Free’ so it doesn’t block others’ calendars. You’ll need to create a separate invite to mark your calendar as ‘Out of Office’ for scheduling purposes. - Enter Time in ActiveCollab
Finally: log your time off hours and dates into the Creative Services PTO project in ActiveCollab.Note: Click into the title of the correct type of Paid Time Off (PTO) from the list of ‘tasks.’ Do not click to check/complete these tasks, or others will be unable to use them.
