Phones & Building Keys
Using The Phones
At Boston University, we issue 5-digit phone numbers to simplify internal communication. The University operates under two main area codes: 617-353-#### and 617-358-####. Instead of using the full 10-digit number, a 5-digit extension system allows for easier dialing within the University’s network.
How it Works
353Numbers: If your full number is 617-353-1234, your 5-digit extension is 3-1234. You simply dial the number without the area code and prefix, starting with the digit ‘3’.358Numbers: If your full number is 617-358-5678, your 5-digit extension is 8-5678. Again, you only need the last 5 digits, starting with the digit ‘8’.
This method streamlines internal calls: making it quicker and more efficient for faculty, staff, and students to connect.
Please remember to use the full 10-digit number, including the appropriate area code if dialing a number outside the University.
Obtaining Your Building Key
Access to the building’s front door outside of normal working hours and on select days in the summer is with a swipe of your BU ID.
Keys are supplied during your Day 1 General Onboarding. Each employee is provided a key to enter 985 Commonwealth Ave. [from the side opposite the parking lot] and any additional keys if you have an enclosed office.
Keys for desk drawers are left behind in the top drawer.
