The Maccabees and Archaeology: Old Texts, New Discoveries <\/strong><\/p>\n

Thursday, Feb. 22nd, Albright Institute of Archaeology, Jerusalem <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

In this workshop speakers will present new archaeological evidence from the second century BCE and discuss the implications for our understanding of the era\u2019s social and political changes \u2013 especially in regards to the historical picture provided by the books of 1 and 2 Maccabees. Specific questions to be considered are: <\/span><\/p>\n

What sorts of material changes do we see, and where and when?<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Settlement size, location, and chronology<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Types and amounts of imported goods<\/span><\/li>\n
  • new household goods, e.g., tablewares, figurines, wall d\u00e9cor, etc. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What stays the same, and where?
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    Are there groupings and patterns in the material evidence? What could these mean?<\/span><\/p>\n

    Jerusalem: can we date its expansion? Can we clarify the relationship to its hinterland?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
