Postdoctoral researcher position available

The Movement & Applied Imaging Lab at Boston University has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher. Start date is flexible. 

The postdoc will conduct research on development and implementation of biomechanically informed interventions for knee osteoarthritis. These projects include the use of quantitative musculoskeletal imaging techniques, wearables, and mobile health technologies for evaluating outcomes of these interventions. Additionally, the postdoc would have opportunities to participate in secondary analyses using large datasets from people with osteoarthritis in collaboration with the Clinical Epidemiology Research & Training Unit at the BU School of Medicine. Successful candidate will work in a trans-disciplinary environment that includes physical therapists, rheumatologists, radiologists, clinical psychologists, and engineers. 

The position is available for two years with possibility for extension contingent on satisfactory progress and availability of funding. Successful candidate would be expected to contribute to data collection and analyses, regulatory support, and developing novel areas of research interest. They would also assist with mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. The candidate should be strongly motivated to publish scholarly papers and will be encouraged to pursue grant funding opportunities if available. 

Applicants must have a doctorate in biomechanics or related fields with experience in clinical research with human subjects and a strong statistics background. Having one or more of these additional skills would be highly desirable –physical therapy, quantitative musculoskeletal MR imaging, musculoskeletal joint modeling, wearables/mobile health technologies, clinical trials, epidemiology. 

The lab is equipped with a 3-D motion capture system, multiple force platforms, wireless EMG system, IMU devices, and a strength testing dynamometer for the study of biomechanics. Additional resources used in research projects include a research-dedicated 3.0 Tesla MRI, software developers for mobile health applications, and resources from the BU CTSI

Spring 2018 End of semester lab dinner!

Thanks to all of our undergraduate researchers for the amazing help this semester. Congratulations to our graduates Jiten and Cam! Jiten is headed to medical school and Cam will be pursuing a Master's degree in engineering, best of luck in Graduate School!

Upward Bound Math Science Program visits our lab!

The Upward Bound Math Science program at Boston University is a part of the federally funded TRIO programs, whose purpose is to prepare low-income and first-generation college bound students for success in higher education.

Over 3 days in April,  5 research labs at Boston University College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College and the Boston University Cognitive Neuroimaging Center came together to provide the UBMS students an exposure to cutting-edge research in biomechanics, rehabilitation, and imaging. It was amazing to work with these promising kids and we look forward to our future collaborations with the UBMS program!

We want to thank Neuromotor Recovery Lab , Human Adaptation Lab, STEPP Lab for Sensorimotor Rehabilitation Engineering, Motor Development Lab, and the Cognitive Neuroimaging Center for participating with us!

Summer funding from UROP for our researchers!

UROP's mission is to nurture curiosity, to capture imagination, and to cultivate relationships between faculty and students beyond the classroom to shape independent, innovative, and collaborative leaders. The UROP program supports undergraduate students engaged in research with faculty at BU.

At the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting meeting in New Orleans in February, Dr. Kumar presented on walking patterns and MRI detected early post-traumatic osteoarthritis after ACL reconstruction surgery.

A different kind of collaboration!

We requested faculty and students from the College of Fine Arts to help create a unique work of art for our lab using items leftover from the lab constructions. The art piece titled "Life Force" was installed recently. Prof. Lydia Musco and her students from Sculpture 2 class created this amazing piece!

In the words of the students -

"Life Force is a collaborative art installation created for the Movement & Applied Imaging Lab at Sargent College by the College of Fine Arts Sculpture II class led by Lydia Musco and assisted by Kayla Arias. Composed of two large wall panels, the project is a reflection of the lab’s scientific purpose: to encourage the repair of one’s “life-force” through the testing of joint agility. The piece was created by utilizing pieces of the hardware used to install force measurement instruments in the floor of the lab and incorporated conceptual ideas surrounding movement in the overall composition. Through weeks of collaboration, the students in the Sculpture class created an installation mirroring movement for the viewing of all who work in the Lab. This collaboration between Sargent College and the College of Fine Arts has been an incredible opportunity to merge the “East” and “West” sides of BU through the appreciation of art and community."
