Ko Lab
Translational Research on Breast Cancer and Inequities in Treatment
The Ko Lab is dedicated to bridging the gap between cutting-edge cancer research and the delivery of effective treatments to underserved populations. We focus on translational breast cancer research at the intersection of oncology, service to marginalized communities, and academic inquiry.
By investigating the interplay between tumor biology, socioeconomic factors, and communication practices, the lab aims to elucidate how these elements affect breast cancer, understand the barriers preventing the application of evidence-based cancer treatments to these underserved populations, and work towards more equitable healthcare outcomes for future patients.
Our Mission
- Advance Research: Conduct research that contributes to the scientific understanding of breast cancer in populations that have historically been overlooked in cancer research, and address gaps in care and treatment for marginalized patients.
- Engage Patients: Actively involve patients from diverse backgrounds in our research process to ensure our work is relevant and impactful.
- Improve Outcomes: Translate research findings into practical solutions that enhance patient care and quality of life, with a special focus on those who have been treated inequitably.
- Promote Awareness: Raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by breast cancer patients from different communities and advocate for their needs within the broader healthcare community.
Our Group
We are located in the Boston Medical Center Cancer Clinic and the Boston University Medical Campus and collaborate with labs in a number of hospitals and universities. Read more about our team and collaborators.
