Research to inform prevention, treatment of heath consequences and policy on gun violence

This research program is committed to one of the most critical public health problems in the US- that of gun violence. The following topics are addressed:

  • Federal and state level legislation surrounding guns, access to guns, and victims of gun violence.
  • The effect and sustenance of social gun culture.
  • The patterns, factors and consequences of gun ownership.
  • Social, individual, spatial and legislative drivers of deaths (fatal injuries) from gun/bullet injuries.
  • Assess the factors surrounding school and mass shootings.
  • Differentiation between direct and indirect gun violence injury survivorship.
    • Direct gun violence injury survivor – is shot and survives the incident.
    • Indirect gun violence injury survivor – is a person who has a parent, sibling, children, a close friend or a close relative who was either shot and killed or survived a gun shot or bullet wound injury.
  • Social, individual, spatial and legislative drivers of non-fatal injury from guns/bullets
  • The injury/ disease progression from the traumatic gunshot injury to several health consequences such as disability, cardiovascular diseases etc.
