Save the Date! Next Brown Bag Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 1:00pm

October 23rd, 2013

Thank you to everyone who attended our second Brownbag today! It was wonderful to have a big group spanning several different departments sharing ideas and responses to Talal Asad’s Formations of the Secular.

To extend our conversation on Asad toward some of his conversation partners, we decided that for our next meeting, we will read some of Charles Taylor’s A Secular Age. More information to come, on which chapters to focus on. For now, mark your calendars for our next meeting on Wednesday, November 20 in the Judaic Studies Library. We will meet from 1:00 to 2:00. It will be our last meeting of the fall semester.

Thanks again for coming, and remember to encourage anyone else who you think may be interested to join us next time.

Reminder: next Brownbag on Wednesday, October 23!

October 17th, 2013

Remember that the next IRRN Brownbag will be next Wednesday October 23 from 12:30 to 1:30 at the Judaic Studies Library (147 Bay State Rd). Please RSVP to Mary Kate Long at longmk@bu.edu by Monday the 21st if you would like to attend (so we know how much pizza to order).

We will enjoy pizza from Otto’s and some lively discussion of 4 chapters of Talal Asad’s Formations of the Secular: Christianity, Islam, Modernity facilitated by Professor Gina Cogan from the Religion Department. The chapters are available as PDFs for download at https://sites.bu.edu/irrn/2013/09/27/asad-chapter/.

If you are reading, would like to read, or have read Asad before, please join us! It would be best for those in attendance to prepare a few questions or ideas about each chapter to bring along with you to the discussion. We’ll also leave some time at the end of our meeting to think about how to utilize our next rendezvous in November. Bring suggestions for further readings or discussion topics.

See you there!
