About
Inclusive Astronomy (IA) is an initiative to coordinate events aimed at public engagement and outreach for underserved communities and/or next generations, while also fostering community with an affinity group for self-identified underrepresented members of the Boston University Astronomy Department.
With monthly general meetings, we hope to brainstorm ideas for public engagement projects, discuss existing ones in the form of round table discussions, and connect volunteers with relevant public engagement events.
With affinity group lunches twice per month, we hope to create a space for anyone who has experienced biases or discrimination in the field based on their identity to gather, share experiences, and connect. Lunches are focused on conversations around relevant topics ranging from life in the BU Astronomy department to tips on how to network efficiently at conferences. We have also engaged in community building events such as vision board nights.
Inclusive Astronomy was founded in Spring 2023 by PhD students Allie McCarthy, Chika Onubogu, Emma Lovett, and Lou Baya Ould Rouis.
IA has been funded by the Massachusetts Space Grant Fellowship and the Boston University Graduate School of Arts & Science.
