Letters from September 1678 between Nathaniel Reynolds and Josiah Winslow, governor

of Plymouth Colony. Reynolds offers a list of men who can help settle the disputed land

at Mount Hope, acquired by Plymouth from the Wampanoags at the conclusion of King

Philip’s War earlier in the year. Winslow approves.

Boston september 15: 1678

After my humbel servis pEsented to you These once [tear runs along right side of page] 

to Aquaint you tEat I Roceived yoE ye Begining of ApEl Last 

past Confirning ye pirchase of Mount hope, And here by I make 

bolde to Informe you that, That designe hath still a being a

mongst us provided Incurragemt will be Afoarded for ouE money. 

Tis not to be douted but yoE End as well as Ours may be 

in a good measure Accomplished in ye setteling of AE place 

with Abel sober minded pirsons in AE way we first propo[…] 

=ed (if Incurragemt be not wanting) Which I dout not […] 

would better answer ye Benifit of AE cuntry AE to ha[…] 

straingers profes it unbenowne to you, which here hath[…]

Efect, honest pore men you did not Want having plenty of […] 

already. Our designe is not to have the poarest but […] 

honnest’s and if not the Richest we know the Blessing of g[…] 

doth make Rich, And Shuld the Land be given us with o[…] 

a blessing we desire not to com upon it, upon such tearmes, 

but that our Romonal may Conduce with that promise of all 

things working together for good. And Sr. ye I may ffurter An=

=swer yoE desire I shall Aquaint you With sum of the names 

of such I beleve are still upon the Roal designe of promoating

the place and being helpfull to’wards a trade boatE by sea and 

Land several of which are of Competent Estates, theyr names 

are as ffolloweth.

After my respects to your Selfe and those gentlemen that have Come treating us 

about purchas of Mounthope; shase may informe you and them, that a principal

reason that made us slowe in giveing answer to your Last Letter concerning that 

matter, was not disrespect to your Selvs, nor the motion made by you; But because 

wee understoode that our Confederate brethren of the Masschusets, and Conecticut 

did with some ernestnes insist upon their claime to an interest with us in those 

lands; which having now Lovingly issued between them and us, and the Lands no[…]

Lying more freely and clerely at our dispose; I thought good by this opertun[…] 

to informe you that our sayd lands are yet free, and wee shall bee redy 

to treat you, or whom you shall apoint ther about, at your owne time

if you still have a disposition to purchas and sattle that plase: And thn I […]
