Description: Josiah Winslow and Thomas Prence write to King Phillip attempting to settle a dispute between Phillip and native tribes. King Phillip believes Narragansetts and others are teaming up against his orders. Winslow and Prence suggest the two sides reconcile and that the trivial matter should not lead to war.
Whereas many controversies have bine between Phillip of Sachem of sawams; and Quiquequnntkat and Namumpan his wife and some Narrigansat Indians that are with them; And the sayd parteys interessed have desired us to take notise of them and by joynto agreement have referred it to our determination and if sew: Wee having fully heard their severall alligations and complaynts; had finde that of principall difference between them hath arisen from up above Quiquequnntkat and his wives enter-=tayning of some Narrigansats agaysnt Phillips liking and good will after conditions broken; and having well minded such please as they have-made for yе proprietye and royalltye to such places as they have bine soe entertayned on; Wee evidently see that if hath bine originally ni of Sd Phillips predacessors, and is acknowledged by ye other to have bine from Philips father conveyed to him and that on this condition that such as should thare live under him should allwayes abserve such orders and customes as they had formaly amongst them, the non abservance where as hath had bine agreat [word crossed out] cause of their prasent trables;
Wee doe therefore give it as our advice for ifsew of the contacts between the parteys above-named, that ye Sd Quiquequnncket and his wife doe dismiss such of ye Sd Indians as are to Philips afence entertayned by them, unless by any agreement wt him hee maye bee made willing to their contyneuance thare on their promise of battle carnage; And for returne of any goods by him taken from them, wee finde hee hath alsoe bine trespassed and damnified by them; yet would have him return ye Canooes Complayned of or anything of that nature it is yet extant; And doe further advise that all unkindnesses may bee buryed between them, and that the remembrance of this differance rising from such smaule beginnings may for future make them wise to live in peace and love.
Tho: Peace God:
Jos Winslow
