Description: A letter from Plymouth Colony’s Governor Thomas Prence, addressed to Philip, dated May 27, 1671. Prence claims Philip violated a treaty, signed in Taunton, that bound Philip to hand over all guns in the Wampanoags’ possession and demands that Philip speak before the General Court regarding this violation.

Since the treaty att Taunton, we are unsattisfied in many things, But especially, in yt you have not so ffriendly and fully as we expected £formed your Tender aims of agreement respecting the Bringing in of all your guns, we found, of the few you have brought in, yough it was known you had agreat number of men in number, arms, but a day or tow before ye treaty, and many were known to returne to Mount hope with Armes after ye Treaty, and many [illegible] and £ticularly an Jndian telled John the interpreter is known to have carryed home tow guns, and livs by you and yet you tell them not in: nor have given any order as is said to some of your men ( as in £ticular them att Assonett) about bringing in these armes. And that you had a considerable number of men near Taunton in Arms att ye Time of our Treaty, to what intent may be Easilie conjectured Theses and what Else we migt mention, maks us to judg it Expedient, yt you should come [illegible] and speake with us at our generall Court, ye beginning of nex Mounth that so if it may be peace and good agreement may be continuous betweene us; Thus expecting your compliance here in we rest
