The defining characteristics of gentrification include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Reinvestment of economic, social, and cultural capital<\/li>\n<li>Social upgrading of properties and locale by incoming higher-income groups<\/li>\n<li>Landscape change<\/li>\n<li>The direct or indirect displacement of lower-income groups. If not prevented or mitigated, the process leads to the complete reshaping of neighborhoods, destroying longstanding social and cultural networks and identities.
