Beth Carragher
Senior Youth Worker Mid Louth Youth Service
After graduating in 2017 from Leeds Beckett University with a B.A. Hons degree in Youth Work and Community Development, Beth gained a post in St Oliver Plunkett Youth Club Crossmaglen working with young catholic people from rural communities. Following this, Beth moved on to the New Leaf programme in Mid Louth. Beth has delivered successful
projects working with marginalised young people from both sides of the border and from Catholic and Protestant backgrounds, highlighting the issues faced and providing support. In 2019 the New Leaf programme won the Community and Voluntary Award for their contribution to enhance the quality of life of young people in Louth. In 2021, Beth was awarded ‘The Municipal District of Ardee Civic Award for leading the way on acceptance and inclusivity for young people in Mid Louth 2021’ after her work organising the first every Mid Louth Pride event. In March of 2022 Beth attending the IFI AMBIT programme for two weeks. Ambit is an annual outreach and capacity building programme in the United States with the International Fund for Ireland which has been a very successful initiative for over 20 years, and it is facilitated by the US consulate in Belfast whist being coordinated by the Washington Ireland Programme (WIP). Each year AMBIT explores a series of themes and participants have the experience firsthand how these challenges can affect communities in some of the most deprived inner cities in the US. The programme brings together individuals from Northern Ireland and the southern border countries and this was a huge opportunity for Beth as she lives in a border village in Northern Ireland whist working in the republic of Ireland. Beth has spent her career to date working with at risk young people and communities that are dealing with the history and legacy of The Troubles. During Beth’s career her experience working in towns and villages along that border has taught her that many young people have experienced intergenerational trauma as the live with the legacy of
The Troubles.
