Family Peer Specialists are parents, family members, or caregivers who have or had responsibility parenting a child or as a primary caregiver for another family member experiencing mental health and\/or substance use challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Family Peer Specialists can speak about and use their lived experience to support other families to advocate for their child\u2019s or family member\u2019s well-being, supporting them in navigating systems, and offering other necessary resources. <strong>Family Peer Specialists:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Connect families<\/strong>: reducing isolation\n<ul>\n<li><em>&#8220;Before I met the Family Peer Specialist, I thought I was alone.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><li><strong>Normalize lived experiences<\/strong>: reducing shame and blame\n<ul>\n<li><em>&#8220;Family Peers know what you&#8217;re going through is not your fault.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><li><strong>Encourage families<\/strong>: to hold hope for recovery and access to support\n<ul>\n<li><em>&#8220;It gives me hope to know diagnoses do not predict outcomes, and recovery is possible.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">National Family Peer Support Certification<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a Family Peer Specialist is also a valued role that may be meaningful for the families with whom you work.
