Farkas, et. al. (2016) suggest <strong>addressing differences when they are:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><strong>Relevant to the partnership<\/strong>: related to the recovery collaboration,<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Occur consistently or frequently<\/strong>: the difference comes up often enough, and\/or<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Impacting progress<\/strong>: slowing or stopping the work toward goals.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Practice Pause: Naming Differences Is Validating<\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Naming differences is another way to demonstrate understanding of others&#8217; perspectives, feelings, and experiences. <strong>Naming differences respectfully can<\/strong> <strong>foster trusting relationships.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>As a recap from the course section on Validating Families&#8217; Cultures, Dr. Xavier Amador (2023), clinician and founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/leapinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henry Amador Center on Anosognosia<\/a>, suggests the evidence-based, trademarked <strong>LEAP Method<\/strong> as a pathway to respectfully convey understanding of others&#8217; experiences, we:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><strong>Listen<\/strong>: give attention to understand an individual&#8217;s perspectives,<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Empathize<\/strong>: share understanding of the individual&#8217;s feelings,<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Agree<\/strong>: express alignment with the individual, and<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Partner<\/strong>: work together in collaboration.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Notice how the family member in the following video names the difference in an effort to maintain a trusting and caring relationship <\/strong>with her loved one. <em><strong>Content warning<\/strong>: this video contains topics that may be sensitive, including medication and hospitalization.
