These feelings and experiences can interrupt trust and connection. The behavioral health support you offer centers around building trusting relationships with individuals and their families, and <strong>your<\/strong> <strong>word choice matters<\/strong>. You convey respect through your language by:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><strong>Using accurate, non-judgmental, and current language<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><em>e.g., &#8220;died by suicide&#8221; instead of &#8220;committed suicide&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Avoiding inaccurate, judgmental language<\/strong> that hinders recovery\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><em>e.g., &#8220;transgender&#8221; instead of &#8220;transgendered&#8221; or &#8220;transsexual&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Remaining active learners<\/strong> about language use as it evolves<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">On Person-First Language<\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Person-first language communicates respect to people with mental health and\/or substance use challenges by preserving their identities, <strong>first and foremost, as people with strengths who have the power to recover<\/strong> (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nfs-tac.org\/resources\/resourceDetails.aspx?resourceID=456\" target=\"_blank\">National Federation of Families<\/a>, 2023).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>THE EXCEPTION<\/strong>: the individual with the lived experience of a mental health and\/or substance use condition may choose to use non-person-first language to define themselves. <em>For example, a person in recovery from substance use may refer to themself as an \u201caddict\u201d or \u201calcoholic.\u201d NOTE: This does not imply permission for others to use that terminology.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Guides to Person-First Language<\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\r\n<p>We don&#8217;t want to avoid talking about sensitive topics because we don&#8217;t know the &#8220;right&#8221; thing to say. Instead, we remain active learners about WHAT language to use and WHY some language is considered unproductive, inaccurate, or hurtful.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The individuals and families with whom you work are the best resources for language to use or avoid. There are also resources like the <a href=\"https:\/\/nfs-tac.org\/resources\/resourceDetails.aspx?resourceID=447\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Family Support Technical Assistance Center<\/a> and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/nidamed-medical-health-professionals\/health-professions-education\/words-matter-terms-to-use-avoid-when-talking-about-addiction\" target=\"_blank\">National Institutes of Health<\/a> that offer evolving guidance on person-centered language for talking about behavioral health and substance use conditions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><span class=\"has-inline-color has-very-dark-gray-color\"><strong>Practice Pause:<\/strong> Reviewing Inclusive, Person-First Language <\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The National Family Support Technical Assistance Center offers a Combined Reframing Language Guide (2023), a compilation of suggested current and accurate language from the organizations listed below, including the African American Behavioral Health Center of Excellence, the National Center to Reframe Aging, E4 Center for Behavioral Health Disparities in Aging, and the Center of Excellence LGBTQ+ Behavioral Health Equity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\">\u00a0
