This tool is designed to help us communicate more effectively and thoughtfully when discussing this crucial subject. By providing clear and shared definitions of key terms and concepts, our glossary list aims to promote a deeper understanding and a more inclusive dialogue in our mission to\u00a0 be good collaborators across BUSPH activities \u2013 Research (Think.), Teaching (Teach.), Practice (Do.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Colonization\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The action or process of settling among and establishing control over the Indigenous people and resources of a geographical area.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/google-docs\/?d7HcCF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sharma &amp; Sam-Agudu, 2023)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Decolonization<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process of freeing an institution, a sphere of activity, the mind, etc, from the effects-for example, the cultural, social, political, or academic effects-of colonization. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/google-docs\/?nbbn3b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sharma &amp; Sam-Agudu, 2023)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>White supremacy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The belief that white people constitute a superior race and should therefore dominate society, typically to the exclusion or detriment of other racial and ethnic groups.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/google-docs\/?6x1mQr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sharma &amp; Sam-Agudu, 2023)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Glocalization<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interplay between global and local factors, and is used in business, sociology, and urban planning.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/google-docs\/?94BewI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Anand &amp; Pai, 2023)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Intersectionality<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The complex, cumulative way in which the effects of multiple forms of discrimination (such as racism, sexism, and classism) combine, overlap, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/intersect\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intersect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> especially in the experiences of marginalized individuals or groups. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/google-docs\/?EQeZQQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Merriam-Webster. Intersectionality., 2023)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Health equity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health equity is the principle underlying the continual process of assuring that all individuals or populations have optimal opportunities to attain the best health possible. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/google-docs\/?FMbR4s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities,.. 2023, n.d.)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Allyship<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An active, consistent, and arduous practice of unlearning and re-evaluating, in which a person in a position of privilege and power seeks to operate in solidarity with a marginalized group.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/google-docs\/?laDQ0v\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THE ANTI-OPPRESSION NETWORK<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d 2011)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Global Health<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global health is an area for study, research, and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/action\/showPdf?pii=S0140-6736%2809%2960332-9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Towards a common defi nition of global health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Power asymmetry<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unequal distribution of different types of resources (like money, knowledge or political authority) across the array of actors involved in governance arrangements affecting health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalizationandhealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12992-019-0516-4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Power asymmetries in global governance for health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Inclusion<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A culture that connects each individual to the organization; encourages collaboration, flexibility, and fairness; and leverages diversity throughout the organization so that all individuals are able to participate and contribute to their full potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/news\/articles\/2015\/an-argument-for-diversity-and-inclusion-in-public-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Argument for Diversity and Inclusion in Public Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Diversity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inclusion of diverse identities defined as non-White racial\/ethnic\/color\/nationality categories, gender or gender identities, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, disability, income\/class\/socioeconomic status, religion\/creed, political perspective or associational preference, and family or parental status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2373379918811820\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Do Schools of Public Health Have to Say About Diversity and Inclusion?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Structural racism<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laws, rules, or official policies in a society that result in and support a continued unfair advantage to some people and unfair or harmful treatment of others based on race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Ableism\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refers to bias. prejudice, and discrimination against people with disabilities.
