(U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2023)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 41% of US school districts &#8211; lack adequate HVAC systems to ensure good classroom IEQ. (U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2020)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viruses, mold, air pollutants, volatile organic compounds, high temperatures, and relative humidity are just some of the many environmental stressors found in classrooms. People, cars, buildings, and climate contribute to the generation and accumulation of these stressors in classrooms. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there are limited standards for indoor environmental quality in schools, although many schools follow guidelines such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/iaq-schools\/indoor-air-quality-tools-schools-action-kit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPA Tools for Schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/image-21-636x474.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1506 aligncenter\" width=\"431\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/image-21-636x474.png 636w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/image-21-768x572.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/image-21.png 882w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/bps-iequ-sys.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1388 alignright\" width=\"460\" height=\"182\" \/><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>If you cannot measure IEQ, you cannot improve it\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A first step in improving IEQ is knowing what the conditions are in classrooms. Since the pandemic, many schools have increased environmental monitoring in their buildings.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1QDhHGZp3p0GnGPkiD5lxLrNgDFRVycN5\/view\">Boston Public Schools installed approximately 4,400 IEQ monitors<\/a> in\u00a0 their classrooms. The monitors help administrators promptly notice and address issues. The IEQ classroom data is <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonschoolsiaq.terrabase.com\/\">publicly available<\/a> and has also been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonpublicschools.org\/Page\/8810\">used to support funding applications<\/a> for school IEQ improvements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/BU-PartnerShip-636x425.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1407\" width=\"396\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/BU-PartnerShip-636x425.jpg 636w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/BU-PartnerShip-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/BU-PartnerShip-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/BU-PartnerShip-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/fabian\/files\/2024\/05\/BU-PartnerShip.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Accurately measuring IEQ helps us improve student health &amp; learning<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools need to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">balance IEQ, SARS-CoV-2 transmission, and energy management goals.
