\"\"<\/a><\/span>I am a<\/span> <\/span>PhD candidate<\/span> whose research focuses on nineteenth-century American literature<\/span>and culture<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>Particular <\/span>areas of interest <\/span>include media studies, <\/span>book history<\/span> and the works of Herman Melville<\/span>.<\/span> The topic of my dissertation is American authorship <\/span>at<\/span> the invention of photography.<\/span> Some questions that I ask myself are:<\/span> How does the increased visibility of the author <\/span>change the author\u2019s relationship with the reader? How can we register this change in<\/span> a work of literature<\/span>? What kinds of claims does the author<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> portrait make on a work of literature <\/span>and vice versa<\/span>?<\/span> <\/span>My <\/span>research is guided by the <\/span>idea<\/span> that the <\/span>introduction of the <\/span>photographic portrait <\/span>makes these questions m<\/span><\/a>ore complicated and more insistent.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I have taught classes on writing, on text and image in the nineteenth century, and on the relationship between American literature and <\/span>the city<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
