ENERGIZE Program
ENERGIZE – Boston University Graduate Program in sustainable energy conversion and storage

The number of people on Earth has grown from approximately one billion in 1800 to more than eight billion today. Current projections estimate that the world population will be 9.8 billion by the year 2050, increasing the demand on critical resources like energy, food, and water. Hence, the development of sustainable energy is one of the most important grand challenges society faces.
The mission of the ENERGIZE program is to prepare today’s students to solve tomorrow’s problems. Specifically, we are preparing student to undertake convergent research to tackle the urgent societal problem of developing sustainable energy conversion and storage.
The specific goals of the ENERGIZE program are to:
- Prepare the next generation of Ph.D. students to tackle the interdisciplinary problem of sustainable energy while establishing a blueprint for educating students to solve societal problems.
- Equip trainees with depth in domain expertise, breadth in the field of sustainable energy, and communication skills, through tailored professional development and interdisciplinary team-work outside their labs via internships.
- Provide students with the skills needed to communicate science to a diverse audience including those in other fields, policy makers, and the public.
- Train students on how to translate academic research into solutions for real world problems.
- Broaden participation of historically underrepresented groups in cognizant programs through targeted recruiting efforts, evidence-based retention, and mentoring programs.
