By altering the biophysical and biogeochemical properties of the surface, LULCC results in changes in surface energy balance, surface states such as temperature and moisture content, the\u00a0dynamics\/thermodynamics of the atmospheric boundary layer, etc. These changes can have impacts at multiple scales, ranging from local to global. Understanding these changes has many important implications for food security, energy production, health conditions, climate adaptation and so on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"\/efm\/files\/2016\/02\/transition.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/efm\/files\/2016\/02\/transition-636x135.png\" alt=\"transition\" width=\"636\" height=\"135\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/efm\/files\/2016\/02\/transition-636x135.png 636w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/efm\/files\/2016\/02\/transition-1024x217.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/efm\/files\/2016\/02\/transition.png 1227w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Figure 1: Transitions among different land use types (courtesy: Elena <span>Shevliakova<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Using the\u00a0HIgh Resolution Atmospheric Model (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gfdl.noaa.gov\/hiram\">HiRAM<\/a>) developed at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) with a\u00a0stretched global grid (see Fig. 2), we conducted simulations to investigate the impact of LULCC over the continental United States. This is an on-going project and considers the urban land use impact, which has often been neglected.
