Mission<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

To research and transform early childhood<\/span>\u00a0nurturing<\/span>\u00a0ecosystems\u00a0<\/span>locally<\/span>\u00a0and globally<\/span>\u00a0to mitigate the impact of\u00a0<\/span>all types of adversity, including\u00a0<\/span>Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE<\/span>s<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0and broad social disadvantage<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Early childhood adversity can cause trauma and toxic stress which in turn<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>create<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0an<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>enduring public health<\/span>\u00a0burden<\/span>, increasing the risk of mental and<\/span>\u00a0physical illness in adulthood<\/span>\u00a0and contribut<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0to socioeconomic and racial health disparities<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We are dedicated to creating holistic nurtur<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0ecosystems integrated across disciplinary boundaries to maximize child well-being<\/span>, prevent trauma,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>improve\u00a0<\/span>inequities in\u00a0<\/span>health and education,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>build resilience<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How we define early childhood well-being<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

We define early childhood as the period from birth to eight years of age.\u00a0<\/span>Early childhood well-being means h<\/span>aving the requisite physical, cognitive, and social-emotional capabilities necessary for realizing\u00a0<\/span>one\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0full human potential.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In addition to its intrinsic value, child well-being is instrumental to the well-being\u00a0<\/span>and health\u00a0<\/span>of societies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How we think about early childhood nurtur<\/span><\/b>ing<\/span><\/b>\u00a0ecosystems<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

In the broadest sense,\u00a0<\/span>early childhood nurturing ecosystems\u00a0<\/span>encompass\u00a0<\/span>parenting and\/or\u00a0<\/span>caregiving within the household; public and private health, education, and social services; and community\u00a0<\/span>and economic\u00a0<\/span>support systems. Nurtur<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0ecosystems also include the policy space in which decisions relevant to early childhood are made.\u00a0<\/span>Unlike nurturing ecosystems, d<\/span>ysfunctional ecosystems often confer risk to the very children who are already most at risk from<\/span>\u00a0adversities such as<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>interpersonal and systemic\u00a0<\/span>trauma and other ACE<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Building<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>n<\/span>urturing ecosystems\u00a0<\/span>plays<\/span>\u00a0a critical role both in preventing\u00a0<\/span>early adversity\u00a0<\/span>and in\u00a0<\/span>foster<\/span>ing resilience in children who have experienced\u00a0<\/span>them<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
