In Massachusetts, this professional development is being offered by Boston University Wheelock College of Education and Human Development. It aims at educators meeting high standards in the early education of the youngest English Learners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Our Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nuestros Ni\u00f1os program\u2019s goals are\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To improve language and literacy education for young bilinguals in PreKinder classes. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To enhance parents\u2019 abilities to promote their children\u2019s language and literacy by supporting teachers in strengthening home-school partnerships.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Professional Development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nuestros Ni\u00f1os Professional Development (NNPD) program consists of four courses leading to an academic certificate:\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working with Families, Professionals, and Communities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young Bilingual Children&#8217;s Development and Learning\u200b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methods for Teaching Young Bilingual Children\u200b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fieldwork in Education: ECE for Young Bilingual Learners<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Program Evaluation\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nuestros Ni\u00f1os has a program evaluation of the effectiveness of implementing the professional development program to prepare teachers to work with bilingual children. This evaluation involves volunteer teachers of Spanish-English young bilingual children, students, parents\/caregivers, and coaches. Participating teachers will complete a teacher questionnaire and their classrooms will be observed by a project team member. Some teachers will be invited to participate in an interview about their experience in the program. Spanish-English young bilingual students randomly chosen to participate in the study will have their language and literacy knowledge assessed in both languages. Parents will answer a questionnaire and some will be interviewed.
