Community Building and Well-being
A community helps strengthen connections between members, and in turn, improve the quality of life and provide a constant source of motivation and support for students, especially in competitive Ph.D. programs such as in ECE. Life as a Ph.D. student can be extremely stressful and peer support can help students cope with the stress and be more productive in their research.
Furthermore, a strong community of peers will eventually grow into a wide network of alumni that will improve the reputation and pave the way for future endowments to the college. Building this community will, therefore, improve the graduate student experience as a whole.
Under community building, we plan to host events that will improve life at ECE. Some of the events planned for the year 2019/2020 include a peer mentoring program, discussions on sexual harassment and mental health awareness, an alumni networking night, lighting research talks, and stress-break socials. In addition, we will have a newsletter that would provide advice and guidelines for everything from settling in as a first-year student to graduation.
