Her dissertation research “Feeding a city: Urban hunting and animal husbandry at Teotihuacan” is funded through an NSF DDIG award and examines the role of animals in the early urban economy at Teotihuacan, Mexico, one of America’s earliest cities. She employs zooarchaeological methods alongside stable isotope analysis and collagen peptide fingerprinting (ZooMS) to reconstruct animal acquisition patterns over the city’s history, including the importance of animal husbandry, gathering lake resources, garden hunting, and hunting in non-anthropogenic landscapes. She has also been developing new biomarkers for the application of ZooMS to North American avifauna to improve identification of aquatic birds and better understand the importance of lake resources in Teotihuacan’s urban economy.

Projects

Proyecto Arqueológico Tlajinga Teotihuacan (PATT), Mexico

Proyecto Plaza de las Columnas, Teotihuacan, Mexico

Publications

2021 Carballo, D.M., Barba, L., Ortíz, A., Blancas, J., Sariñana, D.H., Codlin, M., Saucedo, A., Rodríguez, G.D.T., Excavations at the Southern Neighborhood Center of the Tlajinga District, Teotihuacan, Mexico. Latin American Antiquity 32(3), 557-576

2016 McCoy, M.D. and Codlin, M.C. (2016) The Influence of Religious Authority in Everyday Life: A Landscape Scale Study of Domestic Architecture and Religious Law in Ancient Hawai’i. World Archaeology 48: 411-430.

2015 McCoy, M.D. & Codlin, M.C. (2015) Decoding the Rock Art of Old Hawai‘i: A Brief Report on Petroglyphs in Manukā, Ka‘ū District, Hawai‘i Island. Hawaiian Archaeology 31-43.

2014 McCoy, M.
