Provides theoretical background and methodological skills necessary for interpreting past human-animal interactions, subsistence, and paleoecology. Laboratory sections focus on skeletal identification.<\/p>\n<p><em>Scientific Applications in Archaeology AR894<\/em><br \/>\nThursdays 12:30pm &#8211; 3:15pm<br \/>\nJohn Marston<br \/>\nA graduate-level seminar exploring new ways of addressing archaeological questions through the application of scientific techniques, focusing on cutting-edge methodologies and the most recent literature in the field. Students pursue questions of individual interest through readings, discussions, presentations, and research papers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brown University<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Animals in Archaeology ARCH1775<\/em><br \/>\nTuesdays &amp; Thursdays 10:30am &#8211; 11:50am<br \/>\nKatherine Brunson<br \/>\nThis course will explore how zooarchaeology \u2014 the study of animal remains (bones, teeth, and shells) \u2014 allows us to reconstruct ancient human-animal-environmental interactions. We will cover a range of topics and analytical techniques, including hands-on sessions for the identification and quantification of faunal remains.<\/p>\n<p><em>Global Environmental Remote Sensing ARCH1883<\/em><br \/>\nMondays, Wednesdays, &amp; Fridays 2:00pm &#8211; 2:50pm<br \/>\nJohn Mustard<br \/>\nIntroduction to physical principles of remote sensing across electromagnetic spectrum and application to the study of Earth&#8217;s systems (oceans, atmosphere, and land). Topics: interaction of light with materials, imaging principles and interpretation, methods of data analysis. Laboratory work in digital image analysis, classification, and multi-temporal studies.
