{"id":2897,"date":"2017-03-01T13:23:34","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T18:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/ealab\/?page_id=2897"},"modified":"2021-09-24T15:50:46","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T19:50:46","slug":"fayum","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/ealab\/research\/current-projects\/fayum\/","title":{"rendered":"Fayum"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Project Overview<\/h3>\n<p>The URU (UCLA\/RU Groningen\/U Auckland) Fayum Project aims to explore long-term human impacts on the landscape of the Fayum basin in the Western Desert of Egypt. Now hyper-arid,\u00a0vegetation of this region consisted of a savanna-like landscape when the area was first inhabited in the Early and Middle Holocene.\u00a0The URU Project aims to investigate occupation of\u00a0this region both before and after the desertification\u00a0of the Sahara, with a focus on both &#8220;Epipaleolithic&#8221; and &#8220;Neolithic&#8221; lifeways as well as urban life under the Ptolemaic Kingdom and Roman Empire.<\/p>\n<p>Specific research foci of the team include the timing and intensity of crop and animal husbandry, mobility, food storage, vegetation community reconstruction, and taphonomic\u00a0impacts on current sites. In addition, the team works to preserve\u00a0sites before they are destroyed by recent and ongoing\u00a0agricultural expansion in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Additional information is available on the project <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archbase.com\/fayum\/project.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Environmental Archaeology Lab Member Involvement<\/h3>\n<p>John M. Marston has\u00a0directed wood charcoal analysis\u00a0on the URU Project since 2007.
