The Davies lab studies the influences of these disturbances on corals, both from the perspective of the coral host and their symbiotic microorganisms.<\/p>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hurricane Irma <\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/davieslab\/files\/2020\/11\/nsf-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/davieslab\/files\/2020\/11\/nsf-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/davieslab\/files\/2020\/11\/nsf-633x636.png 633w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/davieslab\/files\/2020\/11\/nsf-1019x1024.png 1019w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/davieslab\/files\/2020\/11\/nsf-768x772.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/davieslab\/files\/2020\/11\/nsf-1528x1536.png 1528w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/davieslab\/files\/2020\/11\/nsf-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/davieslab\/files\/2020\/11\/nsf.png 1722w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/> In 2017, the Davies Lab was subcontracted to work with the <a href=\"http:\/\/castillolab.web.unc.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Castillo lab at UNC Chapel Hill<\/a> on a supplement to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1459522&#038;HistoricalAwards=false\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">NSF award<\/a> exploring the influence of Hurricane Irma on coral microbial communities in the Florida Keys. Within corals, communities of algal symbionts and bacteria can exchange nutrients and metabolic byproducts and form complex co-occurrence networks, however little is known about the resilience of these networks to disturbance. Immediately after Hurricane Irma struck Florida as a category 5 storm, our team visited sites along the Florida Keys and sampled coral microbial communities to compare to samples we had previously collected in the years prior. We then returned one year after the storm disturbance to assess whether these coral microbial communities had recovered. This work is being led by <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=CHwW2yoAAAAJ&#038;hl=en&#038;oi=ao\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nicola Kriefall<\/a> and will help elucidate the influence of disturbance events on coral microbial communities, which are projected to intensify over the coming century. The Davies Lab acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1800904\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">NSF RAPID funding<\/a> in collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.owlnet.rice.edu\/~ac53\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Correa<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/coastalcarboncycle.weebly.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Shamberger<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhcl.edu\/science-engineering\/faculty\/santiago-vasquez-lory\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Santiago-V\u00e1zquez<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sylvangeomicrobiology.wordpress.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sylvan<\/a> labs to explore the effects of this freshwater on reefs of the <a href=\"https:\/\/flowergarden.noaa.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary<\/a>. Our team monitored the freshwater plume and collected samples immediately after Hurricane Harvey and after one month of stress recovery. These data were published in <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/davieslab\/files\/2020\/03\/33.Wright_etal_2019.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Wright et al., 2019<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using gene expression as a diagnostic tool: The mystery of a localized mortality event at the Flower Garden Banks<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p>In July of 2016, a localized mortality event (LME) occurred on the east Flower Garden Bank that included mortality of corals, sponges, sea urchins, starfish, clams, and more. In collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/flowergarden.noaa.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">FGBNMS<\/a> staff, Dr. Davies sampled tissue from healthy and sick patches of affected corals and completely healthy nearby colonies of two coral species. In collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smith.edu\/academics\/faculty\/rachel-wright\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Rachel Wright<\/a> (now at Smith College), we profiled coral and algal symbiont gene expression patterns. These patterns were consistent with a low oxygen event, which also corroborated results from other teams working on different aspects of the LME. In order to confirm that these expression patterns were consistent with low oxygen, Dr. Wright performed a low oxygen manipulation experiment and found remarkable overlap in gene expression patterns, confirming field collected data.
