{"id":2608,"date":"2023-12-12T06:05:33","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T11:05:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/?p=2608"},"modified":"2023-12-12T06:05:33","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T11:05:33","slug":"community-trauma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/2023\/12\/12\/community-trauma\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Trauma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As this course, along with the rest of the courses for this term close to an end, I\u2019m often thinking about how my courses relate to each other and the real world.\u00a0 One thing that I have been left thinking of is trauma, and how traumatic events affect the community.\u00a0 In one of my other courses, I am looking at aggravated assault incidents, drug related crimes and poverty within a city.\u00a0 Looking at all of this data has left me wondering how communities that are constantly experiencing traumatic events cope, or if they just view it as their new normal.\u00a0 Communities who experience traumatic events once, whether that be neighborhoods that are experiencing an act of violence such as a homicide, or on the larger scale such as the events of 9\/11 or the Boston Marathon, seem to be shocked to their core after the events that have happened, and these are usually broadcasted all throughout the media.\u00a0 What about communities who constantly, or on a more continuous basis, experience trauma?\u00a0 Do they build their own subculture around this trauma, and have it become their new normal?\u00a0 Or is it still traumatic every time an event happens, even though they happen frequently?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you look at this on an individual basis, everyone reacts to trauma differently.\u00a0 With constant exposure to traumatic events, some people continue to view these events as traumatic, while others become desensitized to them.\u00a0 When looking at the community level, how do we support them as a whole?\u00a0 If a whole community is desensitized from all of the trauma they have experienced, how do we treat that at the community level, especially if that is the only normal that the community has ever known?\u00a0 Some responses to this might be to maybe open a neighborhood center where the kids within the community have somewhere to go, or to work on lowering the crime rates in the area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As this course, along with the rest of the courses for this term close to an end, I\u2019m often thinking about how my courses relate to each other and the real world.\u00a0 One thing that I have been left thinking of is trauma, and how traumatic events affect the community.\u00a0 In one of my other [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23145,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[2],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2608"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23145"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2608"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2608\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2609,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2608\/revisions\/2609"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2608"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2608"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/daniellerousseau\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2608"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
