On January 23, 2001, 18 months after the persecution started, it was reported that five people set themselves on fire in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China. A week later, CCTV, \u00a0the Chinese government’s television station, broadcasted a program showing a video of the incident. They claimed that these are Falun Gong practitioners committing suicide. By fomenting the public\u2019s hatred towards Falun Gong, the government hoped to justify the long-lasting violent crackdown against Falun Gong.<\/span><\/p>\n

The true facts about this “self- immolation” incident are:<\/span><\/p>\n

1.1. \u00a0Falun Gong’s teaching clearly prohibits violence and killing which includes suicide. Killing lives will incur great amount of sinful karma and will make one unable to practice cultivation. The teachings prohibit killing and suicide and this point was clarified in depth during the BU club seminar.<\/span><\/p>\n

1.2. Since its introduction in 1992, Falun Gong has improved many practitioners’ spiritual and physical health. Why would a practitioner kill oneself while trying to improve his\/her health? It defies common logic. Falun Gong, in fact is beneficial to society, and practitioners are required to conduct themselves according to the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, & Tolerance.<\/span><\/p>\n

1.3. This issue has been covered by international press. Washington Post reporter, Philip Pan, went to victims’ home and found that none of their neighbors ever saw the victims practice Falun Gong.<\/span><\/p>\n

1.5. Falun Gong has spread to over 100 countries since 1992 even during Chinese government\u2019s massive propaganda campaign against Falun Gong beyond China\u2019s border. There\u2019s not even one single immolation or criminal case caused by the practice of Falun Gong around the world except in China, where the state control media tells nothing but lies.<\/span><\/p>\n

1.6. On August 14, 2001, at a meeting of the United Nations the NGO International Education Development made a formal statement which declared, \u201cThe Chinese regime points to a supposed self-immolation incident in Tiananmen Square on January 23, 2001, as proof to slander Falun Gong. However, we have obtained a video of that incident that in our view proves that this event was staged by the government. We have copies of this video here and those interested can pick up a copy.\u201d The United Nations, Reporters without Borders, Amnesty International, The Washington Post, and The Epoch Times have all acknowledged holes in the official story.
