{"id":6184,"date":"2025-10-14T11:25:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T15:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/crc\/?p=6184"},"modified":"2025-10-22T13:18:27","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T17:18:27","slug":"survey-large-bipartisan-majorities-oppose-government-censorship-of-talk-show-hosts-media-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/crc\/2025\/10\/14\/survey-large-bipartisan-majorities-oppose-government-censorship-of-talk-show-hosts-media-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey: Large, Bipartisan Majorities Oppose Government Censorship of Talk Show Hosts, Media Companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Burt Glass<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Almost three out of four Americans (73%) across political lines agree that the First Amendment should protect private speakers, like media companies and talk show hosts, from government censorship so their speech is virtually unrestricted, except for inciting violence.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a key finding in a new Media &amp; Technology Survey by Boston University\u2019s Communication Research Center, conducted in the wake of government pressure to remove Jimmy Kimmel from his late night show after he made politically charged remarks related to assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n<p>Support was strongest among Democrats (87%), but by nearly five-to-one, Republicans agreed rather than disagreed with the statement (64% vs. 13%).<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese findings suggest that FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr\u2019s recent threats against ABC over Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s remarks \u2013 which are jawboning, or what one think tank calls \u2018censorship by proxy,\u2019 where the government coerces private actors to suppress speech \u2013 would be unpopular not only with the American public generally, but with Republicans, too,\u201d said Morgan Weiland, an assistant professor of communication law at Boston University\u2019s College of Communication and lawyer who\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanfordlawreview.org\/print\/article\/expanding-the-periphery-and-threatening-the-core\/\">writes<\/a><span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/explorecourses.stanford.edu\/search?view=catalog&amp;filter-coursestatus-Active=on&amp;q=LAW%204026:%20Free%20Expression%20in%20a%20Networked%20World&amp;academicYear=20172018\">teaches<\/a><span>\u00a0about free expression and digital media technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/large-bipartisan-majorities-oppose-government-censorship-of-talk-show-hosts-media-companies-survey-finds\/\">Read full story here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Burt Glass Almost three out of four Americans (73%) across political lines agree that the First Amendment should protect private speakers, like media companies and talk show hosts, from government censorship so their speech is virtually unrestricted, except for inciting violence.
