For those who study media and communication, the link between misinformation and voting behavior is concerning. A Reuters\/Ipsos poll found that Americans misinformed about crime rates, the economy, and immigration were more likely to vote for Trump.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/crc\/files\/2024\/11\/misinformed-views.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"250\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5628 aligncenter\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One critical factor not fully captured by polling data is the persistence of high prices on essentials like groceries and housing, despite a decrease in inflation over the past year. If people struggle to put food on the table or keep up with rent, that tangible economic hardship outweighs broader statistical trends.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the constant barrage of misinformation \u2013 spread through ads, news programming, and social media \u2013 can create an <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/unbelievable-news-read-it-again-and-you-might-think-its-true-69602\">illusory truth effect<\/a> where repetition makes false claims seem credible. This repetition led many to believe that issues like border crossings and inflation remained out-of-control, despite evidence suggesting otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>In understanding the election outcome, it\u2019s also important to consider the quickly evolving media environment and changes in how people are getting their news and information. These are topics I have explored in-depth with my students throughout the year. <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/with-reports-kamala-harris-might-join-joe-rogan-for-a-chat-the-us-election-is-showing-the-power-of-podcasting-241462\">Podcasts<\/a>, for example, are an increasingly popular medium for news, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/270365\/audio-podcast-consumption-in-the-us\/\">nearly half<\/a> of US adults having listened to at least one in the past month, according to Statista. Both presidential candidates tapped into this trend, appearing on influential podcasts such as Joe Rogan\u2019s (Trump) and Howard Stern\u2019s (Harris). Simultaneously, many Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/29\/world\/democracy-media-challenges.html\">turning away from traditional news outlets<\/a> and are seeking information online from alternative sources and influencers. Even some prominent journalists have left legacy media to strike out on their own (see <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kara_Swisher\">Kara Swisher<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taylor_Lorenz\">Taylor Lorenz<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cnn-wallace-exit-independent-7626881765d5b9dbabe209f8f0368a7c\">Chris Wallace<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Social media has also become a dominant news source. More than half (54%) of US adults, and over three-quarters (78%) of young adults aged 18-24, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/news-platform-fact-sheet\/?tabItem=e54e0c8d-6f0d-486f-809a-274eec12517d\">get their news from social media<\/a> at least occasionally. My students, drawing from their own experiences and research, tell me that young people prefer social media for news because it\u2019s accessible, caters to shorter attention spans, and\u2014importantly\u2014is free. With paid news subscriptions largely unappealing to young audiences, free access on platforms like Instagram and TikTok is more attractive.<\/p>\n<p>However, these alternative news sources often lack the commitment to journalistic principles like verification and accuracy. Since Twitter\u2019s rebranding to X, the platform has become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/elon-musk-twitter-misinformation-timeline-1235076786\/\">significant vector for misinformation<\/a>. Facebook has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/29\/24087220\/facebook-news-tab-united-states-australia\">deemphasized its role as a news source<\/a>, removing its news tab and ending licensing deals with publishers. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/22\/technology\/instagram-news-site.html\">some news influencers<\/a> strive to engage and inform audiences, foreign adversaries have also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/07\/business\/media\/russia-tenet-media-tim-pool.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share\">leveraged the influence of certain content creators<\/a> to spread conspiratorial narratives that deepen existing societal divisions.<\/p>\n<p>The election outcome highlights how emotional narratives held more sway than facts and logic. Interestingly, my research with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/profile\/arunima-krishna\/\">Dr. Arunima Krishna<\/a> has shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0363811122001060\">narrative-based counter-messaging<\/a> can help combat misinformation.
