It also includes material on a number of privately funded and administered programs, such as the Alzheimer\u2019s Association, which provides information on and support for people dealing with dementia, and disability rights organizations, which provide legal and protective services to people with disabilities. By the conclusion of this course, you should be able to help the people who come to you for information or services to determine what they are eligible for that meets their particular needs, and to navigate the aging and disability networks<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Aging in\u00a0Community<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>From boomers to the oldest old, surveys of older adults show that most want to remain as independent as possible, at home rather than in an institutional setting. And, as the Affordable Care Act shows, policy makers are increasingly recognizing the importance of community-based options as an economical and effective means of providing long-term care. This course provides an overview of the emerging issues of aging in place, the benefits and challenges, with a focus on the role of the social service practitioner. Course participants will gain a broad understanding and practical skills, including how to find a balance between safety and independence for the older adult in the community.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Assessment with Older Adults and Persons with Disabilities<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Here is assessment for the twenty-first century. With this course you\u2019ll learn how to determine the long-term living needs of older people and other adults of any age who have functional disabilities and want to live in the community, either at home or in some other residential setting. More and more states are now developing community-based support programs aimed at this diverse population. See the process that unfolds as a skilled practitioner works in partnership with an individual to uncover what is required to meet his or her goals for independent living.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Consumer Control, Choice, and Direction<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>This course is designed to help options counselors understand consumer control, consumer choice, and consumer direction in a real-life context.\u00a0 While the factual information builds additional layers of understanding, the case examples, scenarios, exercises, and discussions are offered to show what consumer control, choice and direction means in practice, and specifically in the context of options counseling.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Core Issues in Aging &amp; Disability<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Understand how disability and age can affect function and quality of life along the continuum of adulthood. Learn about integrated approaches to \u201clong-term living\u201d and the practical implications for consumer choice, self-determination, ethics for service providers, and existing programs. The course guides you to new resources and clarifies federal laws and regulations that affect disability and aging. Useful links and video clips are included.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Legal Principles &amp; Decision Making<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>This course is designed to address the major legal and ethical issues related to informed consent and decision making that social service and health care professionals may encounter when working with older adults and people with disabilities.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mental Health Training in Options Counseling<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>This course is designed to help options counselors provide information and resources to consumers who can then make choices about services that support a self-defined quality of life. Options counselors are not expected or trained to diagnose or assess individuals with mental health issues. However, it is important for options counselors to understand mental health issues in a historical context, be familiar with language used to describe psychiatric issues, know the various perspectives on mental health, and recognize self-determination as a human right. In this course options counselors will learn how personal bias and self-reflection impacts communication with consumers and the necessity of cultural inclusion.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Working with Informal Caregivers<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>With family members and other unpaid, or \u201cinformal,\u201d caregivers providing 85 percent of ongoing primary assistance for older adults in the U.S. today, social service and healthcare providers must be able to work effectively with this essential component of a comprehensive system of care. Studies show that informal caregivers often experience a high degree of satisfaction from their contributions, but they also experience stress and other difficulties as they struggle to meet innumerable challenges.
