Survey and Dataset
COLLEGE ALCOHOL HARMS TO OTHERS (CAHTO) SURVEY
The H2O Study fielded the CAHTO Survey from October to December 2021. Copies of the CAHTO survey are available for public use, but should be credited to the authors of the survey.
Jernigan DH, Tiongson PJD, Lipson S, Xuan ZM, Naimi TS, Trangenstein P. Prevalence of harms to others from drinking alcohol among US college students. Publication details to follow.
We hope this survey will be useful to college and university administrators who wish to use it or questions from it internally to inform them of this category of possible harms among their student body.
We are providing the survey in two formats:
- CAHTO Survey containing only survey questions and response categories
- CAHTO Survey with survey logic provided for survey programming purposes
We assessed the occurrence of 27 types of AHTOs, their frequency, characteristics of drinkers who caused the harms, and negative consequences of AHTO among our respondents (e.g. incurred financial cost, decreased academic performance, utilization of medical or other support services).
As the only nationally representative survey study of alcohol-related harms among college students in 2021, we also received supplemental funding from our funder, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, to add questions specific to student drinking behaviors in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g. vaccinations, mitigation measures such as social distancing and mask-wearing, etc.)
H2O STUDY DATASET ACCESS AND DOCUMENTS
Our dataset, de-identified at the school and respondent level, and its codebook are also available for use without charge. However, we request three things from those who would like access:
- Complete and submit this dataset request form to let us know who you are and for which general area(s) of research or practical application you are intending to use the dataset. We do not require you to clear your research questions with us as a condition of use of the dataset. We are simply requesting general information in order to keep a running list of research studies or campus programs in development that plan to use the dataset.
- Follow standard authorship guidelines described in the above form.
- For researchers, please send us the official citation for your work should it be accepted for publication. We are maintaining a list of works generated from the dataset.
- For college administrators, please send us a brief description of how you used the dataset to inform campus alcohol policies or prevention programs. We are maintaining a list of campus policies or programs developed using the dataset.
Email any technical questions about the form and dataset to Program Manager Patrick Tiongson at pjdt@bu.edu.
For substantive questions about alcohol harms to others or college alcohol policies, please email our Principal Investigator Dr. David H. Jernigan, PhD at dhjern@bu.edu.
