D’Annette Mullen

Dr. D’Annette Mullen is a lecturer in the Special Education program at Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. Known as Dr. Dee, she is a passionate educator and researcher dedicated to fostering equity and innovation in education. Her work artfully intertwines theory, practice, and advocacy and her commitment to qualitative research enriches her exploration of complex educational challenges, enabling her to uncover nuanced perspectives and amplify marginalized voices in education.

Dr. Dee’s research delves into the realms of special education, race and discipline, critical race theory, and student voice and advocacy in school policies. Her current projects include Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) with high school co-researchers to get student recommendations for cellphone policies in schools, SUSTAINing Special Education teachers, and a developing S.P.A.C.E. project where she and neurodivergent students are working to cultivate strength-based mindsets to design assignments that empower learners to professionally integrate their unique personal narratives into classroom spaces.

Dr. Dee’s scholarship illuminates the profound impact of culturally conscious restorative practices and humanistic approaches in reimagining education. Whether mentoring future educators or steering professional development initiatives, she remains steadfast in her commitment to creating brave spaces that foster transformative learning experiences.
