We\u2019ve included some helpful info below to get you started thinking about which courses to select for your first semester.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some helpful notes as you begin to select your courses:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Major required course(s): <\/strong>Please review the Mathematics &amp; Physics<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/addendum\/cas\/ba-in-mathematics-physics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">major requirements<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>for a comprehensive breakdown of your required courses. You will likely aim to take <strong>1-2<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>major required courses<span>\u00a0<\/span>this semester.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Course of interest: <\/b><span>Select a course that interests you \u2013 perhaps based on subjects you\u2019ve enjoyed in the past or a new subject you\u2019re excited to try for the first time!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Language course: <\/strong>CAS requires all students to demonstrate or develop proficiency at or above the fourth-semester level in one language other than English. There are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/academics\/undergraduate-education\/academic-advising\/advising\/language-advising\/foreign-language-requirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multiple ways to fulfill this requirement<\/a>, including external credit. If you\u2019re planning to complete the language requirement through coursework at BU, one of your courses this semester should likely be a\u00a0language course.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span>If you\u2019re <\/span><i><span>new<\/span><\/i><span> to the language, start with the first-semester level (usually coded as 111 \u2013 for example, Spanish 1 is CAS LS 111, Arabic 1 is CAS LY 111, etc.).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span>If you <\/span><i><span>have previously studied<\/span><\/i><span> the language, take a placement test to determine what level to start with (for instance, CAS LS 112 Spanish 2, CAS LY 211 Arabic 3, CAS LK 212 Korean 4, etc.). Please review the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/academics\/undergraduate-education\/academic-advising\/advising\/language-advising\/foreign-language-requirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span> CAS Language Requirement page<\/span><\/a><span> for detailed information about placement tests and appropriate levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hub course:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Students taking BU courses for the Mathematics &amp; Physics major will generally satisfy some or all the BU Hub requirements below. You therefore may <\/span><em>not\u00a0<\/em><span>need to seek out electives to fulfill these requirements:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Philosophical, Aesthetic, &amp; Historical Interpretation<\/li>\n<li>Scientific Inquiry I or II<\/li>\n<li>Quantitative Reasoning II<\/li>\n<li>Critical Thinking<\/li>\n<li>Teamwork\/Collaboration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>When choosing a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Hub course<\/strong>, you should instead consider selecting a course or two that fulfills Hub requirements you<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>won\u2019t<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>fulfill with your major, including:\n<ul>\n<li>Social Inquiry I or II<\/li>\n<li>Diversity, Civic Engagement, &amp; Global Citizenship<\/li>\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n<li>Research &amp; Innovation Literacy<\/li>\n<li>Creativity\/Innovation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span>If you\u2019re not sure how to find a Hub elective, you can review our<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/casreg\/registration-instructions-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>registration instructions<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0for tips on browsing by Hub requirement.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>No Hub requirements will be awarded to courses taken outside of Boston University, with the exception of some\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/admissions\/apply\/faqs-helpful-forms\/advanced-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams\/scores<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span><\/span>As you search, you can also review the course descriptions to see if a course has a prerequisite*. <strong>Please note that you are responsible for completing all prerequisites listed in the course description prior to registering for that course.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>After reviewing this, we also strongly encourage you to work with your advisor, so they can help customize your schedule to your specific requirements, needs, and goals.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/undergraduate-program\/undergraduate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CAS PY 195<\/strong><\/a><strong>: First-Year Seminar for Physicists <\/strong>(offered fall only, 1 unit) <strong>\u2013 Optional:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This seminar is open to physics majors in their first year at BU to help them learn successful strategies for studying physics and to familiarize them with BU\u2019s policies, procedures, resources, and extracurricular activities.
