Remaining BU Hub requirements will be satisfied by selecting from a wide range of available courses outside the major or, in some cases, cocurricular experiences.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A typical first semester Earth &amp; Environmental Sciences schedule looks like:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Environmental Science course<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Biology course<\/strong>\u00a0<em>or<\/em> <strong>Calculus course<\/strong>\u00a0<em>or<\/em>\u00a0<strong>Chemistry course<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Language course <\/strong><em>or<\/em> <strong>Calculus course<\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>or<\/em><strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>Course of interest<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Writing course<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Optional add-on:<\/em><span>\u00a0<strong>First-Year Seminar<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Please see below for more detailed suggestions on each course:<\/strong><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p><strong><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Course #1: Earth &amp; Environmental Sciences Course<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your first course should be one of the following introductory environmental science courses. Both are offered either semester and can be taken in any order, so pick whichever one you prefer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>CAS EE 107 Introduction to Climate and Earth System Science<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Introduction to the Earth as an integrated system composed of interacting biosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere, and atmosphere subsystems. Major themes include earth system stability, instability and capacity for change on all time scales, including human-induced climate change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CAS EE 100 <\/strong><strong>Environmental Change &amp; Sustainability<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Introduces natural and social science concepts that underlie global environmental change and sustainability. Topics include climate change, biodiversity, energy, water, pollution, deforestation, agriculture, population growth. Sustainable development illustrated with ecological footprint based on student&#8217;s lifestyle.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p><strong><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Course #2: <\/strong><strong>Biology, Calculus, <em>or<\/em> Chemistry Course<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Biology Course<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you are registering in the fall semester, we recommend taking <strong>CAS BI 107 General Biology 1<\/strong> as your next course. This is a requirement for the major and is only offered in the fall, so we strongly encourage students register for this course in the fall.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>-OR-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Calculus Course<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you are registering in the spring, when BI 107 is not offered, or if you already have AP\/IB credit for BI 107, you can instead take a calculus course. Earth &amp; Environmental Sciences majors are expected to complete two calculus courses: <strong>CAS MA 123 <\/strong>Calculus 1 <em>and<\/em><strong> CAS MA 124 <\/strong>Calculus 2. You should begin with CAS MA 123 unless:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>You have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/admissions\/apply\/faqs-helpful-forms\/advanced-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AP, IB or other advanced credit<\/a> for CA MA 123. In this case, register for CAS MA 124.<\/li>\n<li>You have advanced credit for both CAS MA 123 and CAS MA 124. In this case, you are done with your calculus requirement for the major and can consider a chemistry course (below).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>-OR-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>CAS CH 101 General Chemistry 1<\/strong>: If you are registering in the spring, when BI 107 is not offered, or if you already have AP\/IB credit for both BI 107 and MA 123\/124, you can consider taking <strong>CAS CH 101 General Chemistry 1<\/strong>. (If you have an extensive high school chemistry background, you may take a higher-level chemistry course; please review <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/undergrad\/general-chemistry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General Chemistry Advising<\/a> for more information about chemistry levels and recommendations.)<em><\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Course #3: Language Course <em>or<\/em> Calculus Course <em>or<\/em> Course of Interest<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CAS Language Course<\/strong>: CAS students must exhibit proficiency through the fourth-semester level of a language other than English. If you have not already done so, please review the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/second-language-requirement\/\"> full language policy here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you plan to fulfill this language requirement through coursework at BU, then your next course should be a language course:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u2019re <strong>new to the language<\/strong>, you\u2019ll start with the first-semester level (usually coded as 111 \u2013 for example, Spanish 1 is CAS LS 111, Arabic 1 is CAS LY 111, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>If you have <strong>previously studied the language<\/strong>, you will need to take a placement test to determine what level to start with (for instance, CAS LS 112 Spanish 2, CAS LY 211 Arabic 3, CAS LK 212 Korean 4, etc.). <strong>Please review the<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/academics\/undergraduate-education\/academic-advising\/advising\/language-advising\/foreign-language-requirement\/\"> <strong>CAS Language Requirement page<\/strong><\/a><strong> for detailed information about placement tests and appropriate levels.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If you\u2019ll fulfill the language requirement through <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/admissions\/apply\/faqs-helpful-forms\/advanced-credit\/\"><strong>advanced credit (such as AP\/IB scores)<\/strong><\/a><strong> or through native proficiency of another language<\/strong>, you have fulfilled your language requirement and can instead take a course of interest (as seen below).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>-OR-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Calculus Course<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earth &amp; Environmental Sciences majors are expected to complete two calculus courses: <strong>CAS MA 123 <\/strong>Calculus 1 <em>and<\/em><strong> CAS MA 124 <\/strong>Calculus 2. In this case, you are done with your calculus requirement for the major and can consider a chemistry course (below).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0-OR-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Course of Interest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Select a course that interests you \u2013 perhaps based on subjects you\u2019ve enjoyed in the past or a new subject you\u2019re excited to try for the first time! If you&#8217;re not sure where to start, you can review our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/casreg\/registration-instructions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registration Instructions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for tips on browsing by topic or Hub requirement.<\/span> <em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span><strong><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Course #4: Writing Course<\/strong><\/span><strong><\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your fourth course should be a writing course:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If you did not apply to BU with a TOEFL\/IELTS score,<\/strong>\u00a0you can take either:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>CAS WR 120<\/strong>\u00a0First-Year Writing Seminar. Each section of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/writingprogram\/curriculum\/schedule\/\">WR 120 focuses on a specific topic\/theme<\/a>, so you should register for a section that pairs with your interests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CAS CC 101<\/strong>\u00a0Core Humanities 1: Ancient Worlds: (offered fall only): An interdisciplinary study of the origins of civilization, from Mesopotamia and the Hebrew Bible to the development of Greek civilization through Homer, Greek tragedy, and the philosophy of Plato. You should enroll in CAS CC 101 if you are considering the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/core\/\">Core Curriculum<\/a>.\u00a0<em>This course fulfills a single requirement in each of the following Hub areas: Aesthetic Exploration, First-Year Writing Seminar, Creativity\/Innovation.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If you applied to BU with a TOEFL\/IELTS score<\/strong>, you should take the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/writingprogram\/writing-program-curriculum\/placement\/placement-faqs\/\">Multilingual Writer Placement<\/a>\u00a0(instructions will be sent via email) before you register for a writing course. The writing placement is a suggestion, but it will help you make an informed decision about the most appropriate level for you. Depending on what level WR course you register for, you will fulfill the following Hub requirements:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>CAS WR 111<\/strong>\u00a0Academic Writing for ESL Students 1 \u2013 fulfills\u00a0<em>The Individual in Community\u00a0<\/em>Hub<\/li>\n<li><strong>CAS WR 112<\/strong>\u00a0Academic Writing for ESL Students 2 \u2013 fulfills\u00a0<em>Global Citizenship &amp; Intercultural Literacy\u00a0<\/em>Hub<\/li>\n<li><strong>CAS WR 120<\/strong>\u00a0First-Year Writing Seminar \u2013 fulfills\u00a0<em>First-Year Writing Seminar<\/em>\u00a0Hub (If you place into WR 120, you are welcome to take CC 101 Core Humanities 1 instead to fulfill your\u00a0<em>FYW\u00a0<\/em>Hub.)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Optional Course #5: First-Year Seminar<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First-Year Seminar: FY 101 <\/strong>(1 credit)<strong> \u2013 Optional<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/student-life\/undergraduate-students\/ospl\/the-first-year-experience\/fy101\/\">FY101<\/a>\u00a0is a one-unit, low stress, non-academic class that serves as a semester-long introduction to BU and college life. FY101 helps you get a head start on making connections at BU. Each section is taught by a student peer mentor and a staff instructor.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>FY101 classes are small and are for new students only, so they provide a great way to get to know other first-years!<\/li>\n<li>Your peer mentor and instructor will provide resources to create a more successful and meaningful college experience and help you get ahead in your first semester here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FY101 includes free, optional trips around Boston.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There are specialty sections based on major and identity (e.g., Undeclared, Natural Sciences, First Generation, etc ) so be sure to choose the one that\u2019s right for you!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/casreg\/files\/2025\/05\/Natural-Science-636x636.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"636\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/casreg\/files\/2025\/05\/Natural-Science-636x636.png 636w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/casreg\/files\/2025\/05\/Natural-Science-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/casreg\/files\/2025\/05\/Natural-Science-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/casreg\/files\/2025\/05\/Natural-Science-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/casreg\/files\/2025\/05\/Natural-Science.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0-OR-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First-Year Career Development Seminar: FY 102\u00a0(offered spring only, 1 unit)\u00a0\u2013 Optional<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/student-life\/undergraduate-students\/ospl\/the-first-year-experience\/fy102\/\">FY102<\/a>\u00a0will help first-year students get started on utilizing the Career Development Cycle to maximize their time at BU. During this course, students will create a plan of action towards choosing a major, creating a resume, finding an internship, and preparing for a career they will love. There are additional natural science Core courses offered; however, we do not typically recommend these for natural science majors who are already taking a lab course this semester.
