Remaining BU Hub requirements will be satisfied by selecting from a wide range of available courses outside the major or, in some cases, cocurricular experiences.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A typical first semester Latin American Studies schedule looks like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Latin American Studies principal course<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Latin American Studies language course <\/strong><em>or <\/em><strong>Course of interest<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Course of interest\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Writing course<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Optional add-on:<\/em><span>\u00a0<strong>First-Year Seminar<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Please see below for more detailed suggestions on each course:<\/strong><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p><strong><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Course #1: <\/strong><strong>Latin American Studies Principal Course<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Latin American Studies major requires ten principal courses, which can be selected from a variety of departments and subjects. For your first class, you should pick <strong>one principal course<\/strong> that falls into one of the following categories: Historical Context,\u00a0Literary, Artistic, and Cultural Contexts, or\u00a0Contemporary Context.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To view Latin American Studies courses offered in the next semester, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/18781oY58Wyb9BS8V4X1GwhD58Sidy44i0h79uS1ZJc0\/edit?gid=1438085640#gid=1438085640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span><strong>please review this list.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>To find a full listing of all course options in each category, along with all major course requirements, please refer to the Latin America Studies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/latin-american-studies\/ba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bulletin page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Some courses from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/international-relations\/ba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Relations Latin America track<\/a> may also be applicable to the Latin America Studies major, but you need to \u00a0consult with your academic advisor to ensure that any course of interest from this list will apply toward the major.<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/18781oY58Wyb9BS8V4X1GwhD58Sidy44i0h79uS1ZJc0\/edit?gid=1128842258#gid=1128842258\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Many of the courses listed are upper-level courses designed for upperclassmen. <strong>Make sure you pick an appropriate level class by selecting a course with a 100- or 200-level code<\/strong> (e.g. CAS IR 242 or CAS AR 201). Also make sure you have met any prerequisites for the course you select.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Course #2: Latin American Studies Language Course <em>or<\/em> Course of Interest<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Latin American Studies Language Course: <\/strong>The Latin American Studies major requires completion of a fifth semester course in either <strong>Spanish<\/strong> or <strong>Portuguese.<\/strong>\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/academics\/undergraduate-education\/academic-advising\/advising\/language-advising\/foreign-language-requirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CAS language requirement<\/a> is completion of the fourth semester-level of a language; this means you will need to take at least one course beyond the fourth-semester level language requirement to complete your major requirements.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are <strong>new<\/strong> to the language you wish to take, your second class should be the first-semester level of that language. This is typically coded as CAS L_ 111 (for instance, LS 111 Spanish 1 or LP 111 Portuguese 1).<\/span><\/li>\n<li>If you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/admissions\/apply\/faqs-helpful-forms\/advanced-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>AP\/IB<\/strong><\/a> Spanish equivalency to CAS LS 212, you can complete any one of the following: LS306, LS307, LS308, LS310, or LS311<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019ve <strong>previously studied<\/strong> Spanish or Portuguese in the past but do not have AP\/IB equivalency, please take the appropriate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/academics\/undergraduate\/placement-tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">language placement test<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>-OR-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Course of interest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Select a course that interests you &#8211; perhaps based on subjects you\u2019ve enjoyed in the past or a new subject you\u2019re excited to try for the first time! Each section of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/writingprogram\/curriculum\/schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WR 120 focuses on a specific topic\/theme<\/a>, so you should register for a section that pairs with your interests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CAS CC 101<\/strong> Core Humanities 1: Ancient Worlds: (offered fall only): An interdisciplinary study of the origins of civilization, from Mesopotamia and the Hebrew Bible to the development of Greek civilization through Homer, Greek tragedy, and the philosophy of Plato. You should enroll in CAS CC 101 if you are considering the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/core\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Core Curriculum<\/a>. <em>This course fulfills a single requirement in each of the following Hub areas: Aesthetic Exploration, First-Year Writing Seminar, Creativity\/Innovation.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>If you applied to BU with a TOEFL\/IELTS score<\/b><span>, you should take the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/writingprogram\/writing-program-curriculum\/placement\/placement-faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Multilingual Writer Placement<\/span><\/a><span> (instructions will be sent via email) before you register for a writing course. The writing placement is a suggestion, but it will help you make an informed decision about the most appropriate level for you. FY101 helps you get a head start on making connections at BU. (Talk to your advisor to discuss these adjustments in more detail!)<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>CAS CC 111: Core Natural Science 1: Origins\u2014of the Big Bang, Earth, Life and Humanity <\/b><span>(offered fall only): The origins of the physical world, a scientific parallel to CC 101. Explores how the fields of astronomy, earth science, biology, and anthropology help us to understand our place in the cosmos from a scientific perspective. Topics include the Big Bang, evolution of the stars and earth, evolution of life, and the origins of human life and society. Assignments include computer-based and experimental laboratory work as well as team-based investigation and original research.<\/span><b><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><i><span>This course fulfills a single requirement in each of the following Hub areas: Scientific Inquiry I, Quantitative Reasoning I, Teamwork\/Collaboration.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li>This course will fulfill the CAS Natural Sciences Laboratory requirement.\u00a0<em><\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>CAS CC 212: Core Natural Science 2: Reality, Science, and the Modern World<\/b><span> (offered spring only): Studies the paradigm-shifting scientific theories of quantum theory and relativity that created a new world view and forced the 20th century into a new understanding of our relation to reality.
