AI-Integrated Pedagogy in Research Methods Research

Research Question (RQ)

How can structured Generative AI assignments be integrated into undergraduate research methods courses to improve students’ statistical literacy and research enjoyment while reducing anxiety and preventing AI-driven learning shortcuts?

Project Overview

This pedagogical research study evaluates the structured integration of Generative AI tools into upper-level undergraduate Research Methods coursework.

As Generative AI becomes increasingly ubiquitous in higher education, this project moves beyond traditional bans or unrestricted usage. Instead, it aims to establish evidence-based instructional guidelines that position AI as an interactive collaborator to deepen critical thinking, not replace cognitive effort.

Key Research Focus Areas

  • Statistical & Research Literacy: Assessing how AI-assisted data tools help students grasp complex quantitative concepts, experimental design, and hypothesis testing.

  • Student Experience & Affect: Measuring changes in student research anxiety, confidence, and engagement throughout the semester.

  • Responsible AI Practices: Training students to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs, detect AI hallucinations, and apply prompt engineering for academic integrity.
