{"id":386,"date":"2023-11-11T10:05:27","date_gmt":"2023-11-11T15:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/buwd\/?p=386"},"modified":"2024-12-20T16:20:38","modified_gmt":"2024-12-20T21:20:38","slug":"a-23-min-binary-in-tess","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/buwd\/2023\/11\/11\/a-23-min-binary-in-tess\/","title":{"rendered":"A 23-min binary in TESS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In November 2023, a manuscript led by Matthew Green from the Max-Planck-Institut f\u00fcr Astronomie in Heidelberg, Germany and including members of the BUWD group (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2311.01255\">Green, Hermes, Barlow et al. 2023<\/a><\/strong>) announced the discovery of the shortest-period binary system yet found by NASA&#8217;s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS)! Although TESS is tuned to finding transiting exoplanets, we used the facility to discover a pair of stars orbiting one other roughly every 23 minutes, one of the brightest (and closest) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TzFwyESy1js\">AM CVn binaries<\/a> ever found. This is the second system we have recently found from TESS that will be detectable in gravitational wave radiation when we launch <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laser_Interferometer_Space_Antenna\">space-based interferometers<\/a> in the coming decades.
