Join the Team
As seen on the About Us page, the team is split into three subteams: mechanical, electrical, and business & operations
Mechanical
Focus On:
- Chassis and Suspension: Develop handling characteristics suited for autocross racing
- Driver Ergonomics & Safety: Ensure comfortable seating and secure driver retention
- Power Transmission: Optimize electric motor power delivery to the wheels
- Impact Protection: Design energy-absorbent structures to protect the chassis and high voltage system
Skills Learned:
- Problem-Solving and Design: Define problems, conceptualize and design solutions, validate, and manufacture parts
- Technical Communication: Prepare technical reports and deliver design reviews/presentations
- 3D Modeling & Simulations: Use SolidWorks for 3D modeling and to perform FEA simulations
- Manufacturing Techniques: Operate CNC/manual mills and lathes, use sheet metal tools, 3D printing, welding, and laser cutting
Electrical
Focus On:
- Tractive Systems: Create a safe and efficient means of energy transfer
- Control Systems: Ensure the tractive system is operating in a safe, controlled manner
- PCB Design/Electronics: Design energy efficient, space saving circuits
- Telemetry & Processing: Monitor and record data from the car in real-time
Skills Learned:
- Problem-Solving and Design: Define problems, learn research skills, design solutions, and test solutions
- Technical Communication: Prepare technical reports and deliver design reviews/presentations
- EDA & Simulation Tools: Use tools like KiCAD, Altium, and Simulink to design schematics, PCBs, and electrical systems
- Electrical System Assembly: Utilize proper wiring techniques, safe operating procedures, and soldering skills
- PCB Design, Manufacturing, and Testing: Create PCBs using an EDA, route them efficiently, send/package gerber files, and test boards upon arrival
- Data and Processing Systems Design: Setting up hardware-software interfaces, recording real time data, and developing UI/UX systems in Python
Business & Operations*
Focus On:
- Club Marketing: Advertise the club across campus at events like SPLASH and online through social media
- Technical Communication: Prepare technical reports and deliver design reviews/presentations
- Sponsorships & Outreach: Find and reach out to various companies, inquiring about potential sponsorships
- Social Media/Content Creation: Monitor and post on the BUTM social media pages
- Organization Relations: Manage communication between internal and external organizations (BU SAO, BU SABO, Formula Hybrid, and more!)
- Event Planning: Set up and organize club events such as roll-out, competition, and team-bonding
Skills Learned:
- Advertisement and marketing strategies
- Coordination with various stakeholders to ensure smooth interactions/collaboration
- Communication skills as they relate to both business and technology
- Effective engagement and analytical tool usage on social media to promote club activities
- Organizational skills as they relate to club finances, sponsorships, and event planning
*B&O (Business & Operations) was formerly called Project Management
