Updates from the AAP!

Dear Future Pediatricians,

We hope your summers have been off to a wonderful start. We wanted to provide you a quick summer update on the opportunities that are coming up in the AAP in the hope that you will forward them to your interest group members.

  1. Submit ideas for SOMSRFT Resolutions:Often times we are frustrated by something that we might see in clinic or read about in the news, and it seems like we just can’t have an impact on it. For example the impact of poverty on our patients or the lack of appropriate mental health services could be affecting your patients, but you might not feel like you have the man-power or the skills to be able to appropriately address the problem. On the other hand it would be great to have the resources and skills of the AAP available to tackle this issue, and creating resolutions is a way to do that. Please fill out the interest form to let us know what issue you would like to see the AAP work on and we will connect with you about creating a resolution around this issue. Please submitted the online form by Friday, July 17, 2015.

  2. F.A.C.E Campaign Poverty Map -  Please let us know what your interest groups are doing to engage the F.A.C.E. Poverty advocacy campaign  via twitter @AAPSOMSRFT (#FACEPoverty and #PutKids1st), facebook or email. We are making an interactive Google map to highlight the diverse efforts of medical students and residents throughout the country in advocating for our pediatric patients living in poverty. In order to make this component of the campaign as thorough and representative as possible, we need your help in populating the map. Please submit 3-5 advocacy projects from your region using the Google form linked to this email by August 15, 2015. Feel free to reach out to  aeporto@bu.edu on any questions on the campaign.

  3. AAP National Conference in Washington, DC Oct 24-27,2015:  Registration  is FREE to all medical students. Special programming for medical students is on Saturday, October 24th!  It's a wonderful conference to attend, and a great way to see all the opportunities that AAP has to offer. Also, AAP has limited scholarships available for travel though these are limited to individuals who are members of AAP( dues are 20 dollars). More information can be found here .

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is anything that we can do to facilitate your child advocacy or education efforts over the summer/coming year, or if you are interested in getting more involved in the AAP. Please also continue to keep us updated on the programming and successes of your pediatric interest group.

Dear Students –

Every year, several of the pediatric residency programs offer scholarships or stipends to help defray the cost of doing an away elective at their site.   As these opportunities become available I will forward the details to you with the contact information and the qualifications for application.  Hopefully these will soon also all be listed on the BUSM Pediatrics Website that is run by the pediatric interest group (https://sites.bu.edu/busmpeds/).

If you have questions about the rotation, I would suggest contacting the program.  If you have questions about whether you should apply (i.e. whether this would be of benefit to you in your application process) please contact your FSA or me as we are always happy to help.  Pediatrics, in contrast to many other fields, encourages these away (sometimes called “audition”) rotations as a way to demonstrate interest in a program.  I know that this is not necessarily true for other fields of medicine!

I just received the following invitation today:

On Behalf Of Laura Ibsen
Subject: OHSU diversity stipend

OHSU is offering a diversity stipend for visiting students to cover room and board during a rotation at OHSU.  The goals of the program are to enhance student awareness of opportunities in academic medicine at OHSU and in Portland, to increase the number of diverse students applying to OHSU’s Residency Programs and to provide mentoring and networking for diverse students.

Don’t Forget- Opportunity to write an article for AAP!

Hello Everyone!

Just one last effort to find authors for this June's Mental Health issue. Please let me know if you or anyone you know would like to write about things like:

- bullying/ suicide
- social media
- anxiety/ depression/ADHD
- the teen brain/developing brain
- teens and alcohol

Also, I'm thinking of doing a Residency Issue for September (tips, advice, interviews with residency directors, etc). Please let me know if you'd like to write for that issue, too.
Best,
Aylin

Read Across America Day Event

In commemoration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday (4/7/15), we at BUSM celebrated NEA’s Read Across America day with pediatric patients at the hospital. First year medical student volunteered to read to the children at the hospital waiting room while they waited to be called in by medical staff for their appointments. In addition to reading, children and volunteers engaged in reading activities like crossword puzzles and word searches. We had a total of around 12 volunteers and read books in both English and Spanish. Some of the older children used the opportunity to read aloud and practice their oratory skills, while others listened keenly and interacted with the volunteers. It was a successful event especially when seen how some of the children preferred to stay with us to read instead of heading in for their appointment! We plan on making this an annual event now that we have gone through the steps of establishing it for the first time.

Pediatrics Panel Lunch Talk

We invited a panel of 4th year BUSM students who have matched into pediatrics to share their experiences and pathway into the field. Our panelists spoke passionately about why they chose pediatrics to approximately 45 students. The told students what opportunities they took part in over their careers as medical students, what experiences drove them pursue forward and what else they considered or thought about along the way. Panelists also were helpful in giving practical advice about how to match into pediatrics and also in sharing their enthusiasm for their chosen profession and future career plans into fellowship.
