Be involved with soccer for young athletes with disabilities!

We received this opportunity to be involved with a soccer team in the South End that coaches 7/8 year old boys and girls. Please see the following message:

My name is Valeda Britton and I am the Executive Director of Community Relations for the Med Campus.

Each year, my office sponsors one of the Fall South End Soccer teams. We usually sponsor the 7/8 yr old boys & girls team. The nice thing about being a sponsor is that South End Soccer is free for over 340 youth living in Boston.  Our assistance  helps with equipment and uniforms.

My friend and President at South End Soccer is looking for volunteers to be Coaches & "Buddies" for TopSoccer at Rotch Playground (30 Randolph Street between Harrison and Albany Streets). This will involve assisting young athletes with disabilities to participate in  structured fun activities.

The commitment is 2 hours (8:30-10:30 am)  on Saturdays mornings from  the end of September to November (approximately 5  weeks).  If you are interested in TopSoccer either as a coach or "buddy", please contact me at Vjbritto@bu.edu and I can put them in touch with my contact or they can email www.southendsoccer.org or southendsoccer@gmail.com. Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions.

NAS Cuddlers Service Learning Group

Dr. Elisha Wachman of BMC Pediatrics is working with BUSM to start a new service learning group that will focus on pediatrics and addiction.

The cuddler program is for infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) secondary to in-utero opioid exposure. It will be based in the BMC newborn nursery and inpatient pediatrics units in collaboration with BMC Volunteer Services. Non-pharmacologic care, including infant holding, has been shown to significantly improve NAS outcomes, reducing the need for pharmacologic treatment.

Nina Gummadi ('19) and Leonie Hoyo ('20) will serve as student leaders for the program for 2016-2017. Please contact them at ngummadi@bu.edu and lmhoyo@bu.edu if you are interested in being added to the mailing list for opportunities with this program.

PEDS held our first lunch talk of the academic year on Wednesday, August 10th 2016. Our "Primer to Peds" introduced students to the array of opportunities to take advantage of in pediatrics at BUSM/BMC.

Dr. Robert Vinci, Chief of Pediatrics at BMC, and Dr. Elyse Portillo, Chief Resident of BRCP, were in attendance to welcome students to pediatrics at BUSM, give advice, and inspire students to be involved. Dr. Vinci also discussed the importance of the Rodman Ride and we now have ten students on Team BUSM Medical Students!

If you're interested in participating in the Rodman Ride in any capacity - riding or fundraising - please sign up for our team at bmc.kintera.org/2016/busm. If you'd like to only help fundraise for the event, sign up as a "Virtual Rider".

At the meeting, we also encouraged students to sign up for an AAP membership, and had student leaders from the following pediatrics-related groups present to recruit students for their groups: CHAP, StreetCred, DREAM, PumpStart, Sidekicks, STEP, REACH, and CAPE. More information can be found about these groups under "Pediatrics-related Service Learning" and "Advocacy Opportunities" in the sidebar.

UCLA Visiting Elective Scholarship Program

The UCLA Department of Pediatrics Visiting Elective Scholarship Program (VESP) provides financial support to senior U.S. medical students who self-identify as being members of groups which are underrepresented in medicine, and who are interested in applying to UCLA for a senior clinical elective. The goal of the program is to expose traditionally underrepresented senior medical students from institutions outside of the Los Angeles region to clinical training in our academic pediatrics program, and to learn more about the Pediatrics Residency Training Program at UCLA. Benefits of the program include…

  • Financial support for travel, housing and living expenses, up to $2,000 for each recipient.
  • A faculty mentor will be assigned to each scholarship awardee, with the expectation that the mentor and awardee will meet at least once during the course of the elective period to discuss residency training and other career opportunities at UCLA.
  • The program will host a networking event for scholarship recipients to meet residents and faculty from the UCLA Department of Pediatrics.
  • Additional meetings with UCLA faculty will be arranged at the request of the student. For example, students interested in Ph.D. training may wish to meet with Division Chairs in relevant areas of research.
