Read Across America Day Event
In commemoration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday (4/7/15), we at BUSM celebrated NEA’s Read Across America day with pediatric patients at the hospital. First year medical student volunteered to read to the children at the hospital waiting room while they waited to be called in by medical staff for their appointments. In addition to reading, children and volunteers engaged in reading activities like crossword puzzles and word searches. We had a total of around 12 volunteers and read books in both English and Spanish. Some of the older children used the opportunity to read aloud and practice their oratory skills, while others listened keenly and interacted with the volunteers. It was a successful event especially when seen how some of the children preferred to stay with us to read instead of heading in for their appointment! We plan on making this an annual event now that we have gone through the steps of establishing it for the first time.
